How this program works
The biggest challenge facing any musician is learning how to practice. Learning how to practice takes time, focused attention to detail, and “set up” to improve sound production. Learning how to practice also means improving one’s reading skills and comfort level with musical notation. The Musical Mondays programs enable students to develop practice skills in a fun, focused environment with others who are motivated to take that extra time to learn their instruments. All band and string students are invited (and encouraged) to participate in this after-school program. The goal is to have students develop a skill set that will enable them to join chamber music groups, play in local youth symphonies and bands, and audition for summer programs. The goal also includes building a music community in the schools and with parents who support a child’s music education at home.

Music for Youth and Pequot Library present the Haven String Quartet performing a string transcription of Prokoviev’s Peter and the Wolf
On March 17th and March 31st, 3rd and 4th grade students from Edison, Bryant, Beardsley, and Park City Magnet Bridgeport schools, will come to Pequot to hear the Haven Quartet string arrangement of Peter and the Wolf, transcribed by HSQ cellist Philip Boulanger. The presentation will be followed by a “petting zoo”, an opportunity for the students to meet the musicians and learn more about their instruments.
The live presentation will be followed by an in-class session with Pequot’s John Kofron, the Youth and Teen Library Services Manager. He will explore how to write a short story inspired by the music and tale of Peter and the Wolf. Photographs from Pequot’s special exhibit – “Alphabets, Bedtime Stories and Cautionary Tales” will be shared to inspire conversation about story making. Students will be given blank books and asked to transfer their story into these books that will be displayed at public libraries around Bridgeport.
